Mixed Media Storyteller & Creative Arts Practitioner

My name is El Havenga and I am a mixed media artist and facilitator currently based in South Wales. Originally from the United States, specifically Illinois and Arizona, my art is influenced by the concept of having multiple places I can call 'home'. Using collage, watercolour and mixed media techniques, I use the creative process to explore identity, memory and growth. My works tend to be layered, detailed and include symbolism involving animals and objects that are tangible representations of complex emotions or concepts. Most of my art is a visual representation of the emotions I was processing during the creation of the piece. The intricate nature of my personal work invites others to step into a specific moment and feeling with me.

Both my personal practice and my facilitation have a focus on the process of creating, rather than solely the final product. A key pillar of my practice is to foster a sense of autonomy, and I strive to create environments in which participants can exercise choice over their participation and aesthetic preferences. My aim is to create an environment where participants and I can explore our artistic identities together by sharing stories and having open conversations during sessions. My practice is rooted in the idea that art can have a profound positive impact on mental health, and I am passionate about sharing this with others.
