Springboards was a project from my second year in the Creative and Therapeutic Arts course, which aimed to help students explore their artistic identities. The project consisted of five smaller pieces, the ‘springboards,’ each exploring different themes, and a final project at the end, which explored a theme of our choosing. Below are the springboards that resonated most with me and my final installation.

SPRINGBOARDS

This mobile was created in response to the theme repetition. Each page that creates this structure is a photocopy of my journal with the personal details redacted. This piece is a vulnerable look into the method I use to process events and emotions. I have regularly journaled since 2016, but the pages used for this project are from 2020 to 2022.

This piece is a response to the theme ‘Material Engagement’ and is an exploration of the various stages of materials. The main structure was created by pouring melted wax on ice and other frozen objects. The form of the wax sculpture was out of my control and reflected the motion of flowing water and other ever-changing elements of nature. The rocks, shells, and pieces of pottery that sit within the piece were gathered from bodies of water around Wales and represent how nature changes objects

This piece demonstrates the complicated nature of processing pain. My intention is not to glamorize it or make it seem like wounds have to turn into art but instead to hold a space in which pain just is. Sometimes simply feeling your emotions feels too nebulous and elusive, and you need a tangible reflection of your hurting. In her poem The Glass Essay, Anne Carson describes 13 painful visions she experienced following the end of a love affair. She describes these as “naked glimpses of my soul” and calls them ‘Nudes.’ I have titled this piece ‘Nude #14’ because, like Carson’s poem, all of the elements in this piece are glimpses of my soul. Each charcoal drawing is a visual portrayal of challenging emotions and experiences I have gone through; some depict things from the past, and others represent what I was feeling while creating them. Each drawing had its own method depending on the feeling or experiences it was portraying. Some were very calculated and detailed, and others were created with no prior planning using large, bold lines. Every detail of this piece reflects my personal experience; however, I hope it may be a visual aid to help others articulate their emotions and show how effective art can be when finding the words for something feels impossible.
