Hijinx odyssey

Playful and creative workshops focused on engagement and line memorization.

This project ran from September to December 2021. It was in partnership with Hijinx Odessey, a community theatre group comprising a mixture of actors with learning disabilities and/or autism and neurotypical actors who perform side-by-side. In 2021, the CTA first years held workshops and facilitated groups for Odyssey Members as they prepared for their annual Christmas show. Toward the end of the project, CTA students held workshops for Odyssey members in small groups. We then used their work as inspiration for art pieces that would be exhibited in Wales Millennium Center, where the Christmas play occurred.

The earrings I created and the participant artwork that inspired them (2021).

One of the aims of our workshop with Hijinx Odyssey members was for them to connect to the characters they were playing in their performance of Pinocchio and the Northern Lights. I spent most of our session interacting with Becky, who played the King and the cat Carlo, and Lewis, who played the Sea Captain. However, I found it necessary to represent the work of all our participants in my creations as they all expressed their excitement about working on and being in the show. I wanted to capture this excitement and connection in my work, so I created these earrings because they were an excellent way to recreate their exact drawings. The swirl, cat, and king earrings are made using paint markers and coloured pencils on shrink paper. I created the orange face earrings using clay, acrylic paint, and paint markers.
